A week ago, Alberta banned regulated betting on UFC events, but it didn't last long. On Friday, the Alberta Games, Liquor and Cannabis Commission announced that the ban would be lifted and that betting on UFC would be renewed on the platform. Meanwhile, Ontario, which banned betting, is still sticking to its decision and has not reconsidered.

Alberta and Ontario's betting ban was announced in connection with the November UFC game, where suspicious amounts of betting patterns were reportedly recorded. The fight broke out between two players of coach James Kraus, who were banned from participating in federation events after an investigation by the Nevada Athletic Commission.

Mr. Kraus' license was suspended on November 18, 2022, in connection with one of his fighters, who reportedly attracted a shady betting pattern, due to an investigation by Nevada regulators. This raised concerns about the integrity of the gambling industry, and AGLC decided to stop betting on UFC events on its Play Alberta sportsbook online platform.

But those concerns have since been eased, and AGLC has therefore decided to lift the ban on the UFC betting market. In a press release, Crown said protecting consumers in the province is paramount for AGLC. The committee says it will remain vigilant when monitoring the situation and ensure that players continue to have safe and secure game options on the platform.

In a Dec. 2, 2022 statement, UFC vows to focus on the integrity of sports. The group also informed all fighters and team members that it had been banned from betting on UFC events weeks before the suspicious fight. Ontario and Alberta, meanwhile, were only in jurisdiction to ban UFC betting.

It should be noted that Alberta's ban affects the state's only regulatory platform, while Ontario's decision affects a much larger player base. This is because Ontario operates an open, regulated iGaming model that allows dozens of operators to legally offer mobile gambling and sports betting in the state. The Mayor is overseen by the Ontario Alcohol and Gaming Board.

On Friday, AGCO commented that it was well aware of the UFC's statement last week and was encouraged by the organization's commitment to integration. Regulators acknowledged the latest action taken by the UFC and said they were committed to working with Ontario's gaming industries, UFC, OLG and iGO, to ensure that the sport has a strong betting integrity framework.

Meanwhile, AGCO is working to expand its iGaming model as it grants more private companies in early December. The last three companies to be licensed are Retip Limited, Elips Entertainment Limited and Delta IGaming. And to connect to the market online, you need an operating agreement from iGaming Ontario, a subsidiary of the regulator.
